Grieving a Pet: Why the Loss Can Feel So Deep
The bond with an animal can be woven through everyday life. Its loss deserves to be taken seriously.
The shape of the loss
A pet may be beside you through ordinary mornings, difficult days and important milestones. Their routines become part of your own: the sound of them coming into a room, the walk you take together, the quiet company they offer. When they die, it can feel as though many little pieces of daily life have changed at once.
Grief for an animal companion is personal. Some people feel sadness, anger or guilt. Others notice an unexpected sense of emptiness, or find that a decision they made about their pet’s care is hard to stop revisiting. There is no timetable for how you should feel.
When other people do not understand
Sometimes people around us understand immediately. Sometimes they say things that minimise the loss, even if they mean well. If you have heard “it was only a pet”, it can make an already painful experience feel lonelier.
You are allowed to recognise the relationship for what it meant to you. Grief does not have to be compared with anybody else’s loss to be real. Naming the details of the bond, including the funny and difficult parts, can be one way of honouring it.
Making room for remembrance
There is no single right way to remember a pet. You might look through photographs, talk about them with someone who knew them, keep a small memento or simply allow yourself to miss them. You might want to do none of those things yet. Give yourself permission to find your own way.
If your grief feels difficult to carry alone, talking to someone who will listen without judgement may help. I offer counselling for bereavement, including the loss of a pet, and we can make space for the relationship and the feelings that follow its ending.
Support when you need it
You can get in touch if you would like to ask about counselling. Blue Cross also offers a dedicated pet loss support service for people who would like to talk about their experience.
